Welcome to The Wild Dolphin Project

The Wild Dolphin Project is a non-profit, scientific research organization, that studies and reports on a specific pod of free-ranging Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis). Objectives of this long-term, non-invasive field research are to gather information on the natural history of these dolphins, including behaviors, social structure, communication, and habitat; and to report what we have learned to the scientific community and the general public.

WDP attended the 18th Bienniel conference on the Biology of Marine Mammals in Quebec City, Canada!
Quebec City was beautiful, with a wonderful view of the St. Lawrence River.  The conference was full off informative talks and posters. We met with many friends and colleagues, as well as new acquaintances throughout the 5 day conference.
Cindy Elliser (co-author Denise Herzing) gave a talk on part of her dissertation entitled, "Replacement dolphins? Immigration and social restructuring of long-term resident bottlenose dolphins in the Bahamas after two hurricanes".
Fabienne Delfour and co-author Denise Herzing presented a poster entitled, "Mirror Exposure to Free-Ranging Atlantic Spotted Dolphins in the Bahamas".
Tiffany Adams, a WDP masters student, along with co-authors Denise Herzing and Diane Claridge, presented a poster entitled, "The use of long-term data to examine variability in the population structure and habitat use of two nearby populations of Atlantic spotted dolphins in the northern Bahamas".
Visit the Society for Marine Mammalogy Website, www.marinemammalogy.org , to see the abstracts to these presentations and more. This conference is held every 2 years, and we look forward to another great event closer to home, in Tampa, FL in 2011!

Thanks to JTK Communications you can see our presentation we give to public schools, organizations and clubs right on your own computer!  JTK Communications recorded our most recent presentation given by Cindy Elliser, Research Assistant, Ph.D. Candidate, held at Scuba Delray on July 8, 2009.  Check it out!

THE RELEASE OF CUTTER!!
The Wild Dolphin Project is proud to have been a part of a team of organizations and people who helped successfully release a spotted dolphin, Cutter, back into the wild.  After spotting and monitoring a dolphin in the wild whom seemed to be at risk, Cutter was deemed by officials as emaciated, out of habitat and in trouble.  He was successfully rescued, rehabilitated and released back into the wild with a pod of 20+ spotted dolphins!
Being a part of this three month rehab and release reminds us why it is important to do the research that we have done for almost 25 years.  We were able to help save an individual and we wish Cutter the best of luck!  Check out Dr. Herzing's blog to learn more about Cutter and his new home!   CLICK HERE

2008 GUGGENHEIM FELLOW

Dr. Denise L. Herzing, Research Director and Founder of The Wild Dolphin Project, has been recently recognized by the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation as a 2008 Fellow.  This prestigious award recognizes Herzing’s dedication as a scientist and was “appointed on the basis of stellar achievement and exceptional promise for continued accomplishment” which is stated in Guggenheim Foundation’s press release on April 3, 2008.

“I am most honored to have been chosen among both current and past Guggenheim Fellows.  I thank those who have helped me pursue my dream of studying wild dolphins” states Dr. Herzing.   This award will help in the writing of her book, which will illuminate the lives of these dolphins - “In Their World, On Their Terms”.
